The forest fire map in particular is beautiful--the orange sky and atmosphere of that map is fantastic. The game is just plain fun. Definitely recommended.. Game has some serious balance issues, as you can race a perfect race, hit every short cut, have the best jet in the game, and even have the difficulty on easy and still lose the race. Not recommended until they balance out the difficutly more. As it is, you can only win some of the late game races by a prayer to the RNG goddess.. Need better graphics, rest is fun.. It's like Jet Moto and Wave Race had a baby. The AI is ridiculously hard, and it will kill you on corners (you slow down while they don't lose a single bit of speed). Other than that, it's a fun game. I'm a Riptide GP 2 veteran here, so here are my two cents about this sequelI decided to change my opinion of this game as I put a little bit more hours into it. However, I still mantaining my initial observations about it. The difference is that I would recommend it now instead.The game has all the annoyances of previous titles in the series, without having any of the fun things that made those previous games enjoyable. It's still a game about grinding so that you can buy a bike and upgrade it, but now the bike gets nerfed down when entering races bellow the stage in which you acquired that bike. What the actual f$%k were these people thinking! However, there are plenty of events to keep you ocupied, that will tend to put you on the same tracks over and over again. The color palette on some races is super crappy, so you will find yourself racing in cities where the water is grey, the buildings are grey, the sky is grey, and the obstacles that knock you down from your bike are ALSO grey. There are three difficulties in the game, easy, medium, and hard. Hard is unbeatable, and the other two make you feel unaccomplished, effectively making the game pointless. I don't think I have ever been so angry with a game, and to further exacerbate this, I was (still am) totally hooked with GP2. Riptide GP2, this game's predecessor is a much more simple game, but orders of magnitude more fun to play. I still believe that most of the flaws in this game can be corrected with a simple patch though. So there is hope for this game still. The bikes are the coolest of all of the series, lookwise that is. And some minor story elements have been added to the game, so now you gain riders as well as bikes as you progress, each coming with their own mini story arcs that leads to exclusive races, open only to those riders. This would have been amazing if they would have put a little bit more effort into the monologs of these characters, as well as their stories in general. But the stories are so dumb, and the riders are so poorly writen, that you can't really appreciate any of them. Awesome idea, just poorly executed.The game's still somehow fun to play, although not worth obsessing over with.. Whilst the graphics might not be so amazing, the gameplay makes up for that. And not only that, but the soundtrack which is being played in this game is just.. AMAZING!. This game is a fun arcade racing game that will challenge you even after you've maxed out your bike. The game is a bit grindy and some losses feel a bit cheap, but I had a lot of fun with it. If you played Riptide GP 2 (this game's prequel) you'll find that it's largely more of the same with better graphics and an actual story, and that's not a bad thing at all. The game runs very well on my relatively old (2014) laptop and works wonderfully with a controller. I don't think tricks would work as well with a keyboard though, so if you don't have a controller this game might be a bit harder than it should be, especially the stunt mode.The track selection is fairly good, the shortcuts aren't always obvious and there are plenty of unlockables to keep you busy. However, the game does repeat events many times to pad its length and it's a bit unnecessary, especially considering that you seem to get the best bike (IMO) somewhere in the middle of the campaign.In terms of modes, there's a career, a single race mode, a global challenge that amounts to time trials with a leaderboard, splitscreen and online multiplayer. Unfortunately, the online portion of the game is dead, and on splitscreen you can only chose from preselected track lists, so racing with other people is a bit limited. That said, the single player mode is worth the price of admission, so I won't hold the multiplayer against the game.All in all I think I got my money's worth and II recommend this game to any arcade racing fan.. Riptide Renegade is a racing game where you control a hydrojet. Tracks are equipped with lot of trampolines which you can use to jump into an air to make stunts. As you make stunts, you gain boost points, which can be expanded for a short speed burst.The game has a story: you play as a racer who was set up and spent two years in prison for illegal racing, and now wants his revenge. As you progress through the story, you unlock new pilots and new hydrojets.As you race, you gain money, which you can spend to improve your hydrojet performance, and skill points, which you can spend to unlock new better stunts.There are may be around 7 tracks I think, which serves well for a story mode, but may be not really sufficient for online play; and 4 game modes - race; elimination, where last racer is eliminated each 15 seconds; slalom, which replaced time trial of previous installment I think, and is too simple actually; and freestyle, where you gain points for stunts, and which I personally hate. All this makes enough variation to be fun.The physics is based on Bullet engine, I think - at least it was in previous installment - and is very good, though not particulary realistic. You can see it as some mix between simulation and arcade, which actually is lot of fun. In this installment, you can go underwater; there were also implemented rogue waves which you can use as trampolines as well.I want to specifically address difficulty issue which receives mixed reception in reviews. The game starts very easy, you could win even if you crash into something and fall. The middle of the story has medium difficulty, where you can beat opponents if you roughly understand what you're doing. The endgame is really difficult - you need to have a fully upgraded hydrojet, any mistake eliminates your chances, and you probably need a little luck as well. This is not a casual game which you can beat in a workday by any means, but it is not a core simulation game like professional racing sim either.Visuals are very good, you will see splashes of water on your camera. If you dive in the water, the view is changed accordingly. It is raining on some stages. The game lost the sparkly feeling of a holiday, though, which I am a little disappointed about.The only annoying feature is a police on some stages; storyline-wise it is supposed to prevent pilots from racing, but it will only go after you, which is a bit annoying. Police is really easy to avoid though, and sometimes it can even be used to your advantage. Luckily, the most complex stages do not have police.Sound is very good, engines are realistic, you can deduce distance from opponents by the sound of their engines. The music is a bit disappointing. I mean it is okay, but nothing memorable. GP2 had better soundtrack overall.The game is a sequel to Riptide GP2, so some comparison is in order. I can't say it is an upgrade; to be honest, I liked GP2 more, but I still believe you should buy Renegade if you have GP2. If you don't, buy both, they worth playing.
